Liturgical Images from Budapest: Ancient Roman Liturgy, Missa Cantata
On the second day of the conference, participants were invited to a splendid parish church which sits on the banks of the Danube river, looking toward the stately palace of Budapest. The parish is that of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Mass was celebrated by Fr. Ervin Kovács.
As you approached the church itself, one could see architecturally that it was originally a gothic structure which was partially adapted later on in some fashion (whether it was built upon, or merely stylistically altered I know not).
The Mass itself incorporated beautiful chant and polyphony, provided by two children's scholas.
Budapest Liturgical Conference: Solemn Pontifical Mass
The final in the series of liturgical images which I wish to bring you from Budapest you have already had a slight view of in preceding articles on the conference. They come from the Solemn Pontifical Mass celebrated in St. Teresa of Avila church.
There are a couple of interesting liturgical notes about this liturgy, so do read on.
(The church, which is quite large, was standing room only by the time the Mass actually began and one could sense great anticipation.)
(Taking place in the context of an international liturgical conference, the homily was delivered in Latin)
(The concluding prayers after Mass)
Two interesting notes of liturgical minutiae from the ceremonies of the Pontifical Mass.
One is that it was a pleasant surprise to see the use of the (now optional) pontifical buskins and shoes -- some of you may have picked up on this in the pictures. This is particularly rare to see in large part because of pragmatic considerations: shoes are a size specific matter, very particular to an individual bishop.
(Those more aware of pontifical ceremonial might note the use of the crozier, which indeed, wasn't technically correct. However, these pontifical ceremonies are still very new here, so please do not focus upon the point.)
Notre Dame du Cap Pilgrimage, Quebec
The annual Marie Reine du Canada pilgrimage to Notre Dame du Cap (Our Lady of the Cape) was made last weekend.
I think one can clearly see this pilgrimage as a kind of off-shoot from the Chartres Pentecost Pilgrimage, which is a spectacular thing, for these sorts of events bring with them a spiritual power that can further draw people into the cause of the new liturgical movement. Indeed, we should hope for and encourage more events such as these throughout various parts of the world.
I was pleased to receive some photos of this recent pilgrimage, and I understand some video may also be forthcoming in coming days.
For more information on the pilgrimage itself, do visit the link above.

Vienna Oratory: Archbishop Farhat
We recently showed you images from Archbishop Farhat's Pontifical Mass in Budapest. Quite coincidentally, during that same period, the NLM also received images of this same Nuncio to Austria from the Viennese Oratory where he performed confirmations. Here are some images of that event.Solemn Mass - Cathedral Basilica of Denver
The NLM was sent news of a recent Solemn Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, in Denver Colorado. 630 people was unofficial count of attendees.Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Bayonne, NJ
Cantemus Domino features a report with images of the Extraordinary Form at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Bayonne, NJ.
Kenrick Seminary celebrates Solemn Mass (Usus Antiquior)
The NLM received word today that the seminarians at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis spent the day today in a workshop on the usus antiquior. The workshop began with a Solemn Mass offered at the old Kenrick Seminary Chapel (now the Cardinal Rigali Center), celebrated by Fr. Karl Lenhardt of the Institute of Christ the King -- who also recently celebrated the Sept. 14th Mass on EWTN with great excellence.
Here are some photos of the event.
