Vatican City, 16 March 2012 (VIS) - Given below is the text of a communique relating to the Society of St. Pius X, released this morning by the Holy See Press Office.

"During the meeting of 14 September 2011 between Cardinal William Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and president of the Pontifical Commission 'Ecclesia Dei', and Bishop Bernard Fellay, superior general of the Society of St. Pius X, the latter was presented with a Doctrinal Preamble, accompanied by a Preliminary Note, as a fundamental basis for achieving full reconciliation with the Apostolic See. This defined certain doctrinal principles and criteria for the interpretation Catholic doctrine, which are necessary to ensure faithfulness to the Church Magisterium and 'sentire cum Ecclesia' [means: thinking with the Church].
"The response of the Society of St. Pius X to the aforesaid Doctrinal Preamble, which arrived in January 2012, was examined by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith before being submitted to the Holy Father for his judgement. Pursuant to the decision made by Pope Benedict XVI, Bishop Fellay was, in a letter delivered today, informed of the evaluation of his response. The letter states that the position he expressed is not sufficient to overcome the doctrinal problems which lie at the foundation of the rift between the Holy See and the Society of St. Pius X.
"At the end of today's meeting, moved by concern to avoid an ecclesial rupture of painful and incalculable consequences, the superior general of the Society of St. Pius X was invited to clarify his position in order to be able to heal the existing rift, as is the desire of Pope Benedict XVI".

[UPDATE - 1500 GMT]In an article on today's events, Salvatore Izzo reports the following for Italian news agency AGI:

The Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal William Joseph Levada, delivered [the content of the communiqué] to the Superior General of the Society, Bishop Bernard Fellay, in a conversation that lasted for over two hours ... . During today's meeting in the Palace of the Holy Office - in which the Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Abp. Luis Francisco Ladaria, and the Secretary of the Ecclesia Dei Commission, Mgr. Guido Pozzo, also took part, while Bp. Fellay was joined by his assistant Fr. Nelly - a complete rupture was avoided by the Holy See, making it clear that Benedict XVI still expects a recomposition.

Ciudad del Vaticano, 16 de marzo de 2012 (VIS).-Publicamos a continuación el comunicado emitido esta mañana por la Oficina de Prensa de la Santa Sede relativo a la Fraternidad Sacerdotal San Pio X.

“Durante el encuentro del 14 de septiembre de 2011 entre el cardenal William Levada, prefecto de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe y presidente de la Pontificia Comisión 'Ecclesia Dei' y el obispo Bernard Fellay, Superior General de la Fraternidad Sacerdotal San Pío X, fue entregado a este último un 'Preámbulo doctrinal', acompañado de una 'Nota preliminar', como base fundamental para el logro de la reconciliación plena con la Sede Apostólica. Se enunciaban allí algunos principios doctrinales y criterios de interpretación de la doctrina católica necesarios para garantizar la fidelidad al Magisterio de la Iglesia y el 'sentire cum Ecclesia'.

La respuesta de la Fraternidad Sacerdotal de San Pío X con respecto al 'Preámbulo doctrinal', mencionado más arriba, recibida en enero de 2012, fue sometida al examen de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe y, sucesivamente, al juicio del Santo Padre. En cumplimiento de la decisión del Papa Benedicto XVI, en una carta entregada hoy se ha comunicado al obispo Fellay la evaluación de su respuesta. En la carta se observa que la posición por él expresada no es suficiente para superar los problemas doctrinales que subyacen a la fractura entre la Santa Sede y dicha Fraternidad.

Al término del encuentro de hoy, guiado por la preocupación de evitar una ruptura eclesial de consecuencias dolorosas e incalculables, se ha invitado al Superior General de la Fraternidad Sacerdotal San Pío X a aclarar su posición, a fin de que se recomponga la fractura existente, como desea el Papa Benedicto XVI”.

A esta altura todos já lemos o comunicado da Sala de Imprensa da Santa Sé relativo ao encontro entre o Cardeal William Levada, prefeito da Doutrina da Fé e presidente da Ecclesia Dei, e Dom Bernard Fellay, Superior Geral da FSSPX, ocorrido hoje em Roma.

No curso do encontro o cardeal entregou a Dom Fellay uma carta “em obediência à decisão de Bento XVI”, na qual “se apresenta que a posição, expressa por ele [Dom Fellay], não é suficiente para superar os problemas doutrinais que estão na base da fratura entre a Santa Sé e a Fraternidade”.

Já se esperava que a resposta da Fraternidade ao preâmbulo doutrinal não satisfaria à Santa Sé. Ocorre que, por desejo do Papa, renovou-se o convite a Dom Fellay para “esclarecer a sua posição a fim de poder chegar à recomposição da fratura existente”.

Usam-se, no breve comunicado, duas expressões distintas: ruptura e fratura. Embora não sejam termos técnicos da teologia, parecem expressar a realidade atual (fratura - irregularidade canônica) e a que se deseja evitar (ruptura - cisma).

O último parágrafo do comunicado deixa a situação em suspenso por mais algum tempo, desqualificando as vozes que se levantaram para dar por encerradas as tratativas com a Fraternidade. Ainda é cedo para os açodados, de ambos os lados.

COMUNICATO SU FRATERNITÀ SACERDOTALE SAN PIO X Città del Vaticano, 16 marzo 2012 (VIS). Pubblichiamo di seguito il Comunicato diffuso questa mattina dalla Sala Stampa della Santa Sede relativo alla Fraternità Sacerdotale San Pio X. "Durante l’incontro del 14 settembre 2011 fra Sua Eminenza il Signor Cardinale William Levada, Prefetto della Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede e Presidente della Pontificia Commissione Ecclesia Dei, e Sua Eccellenza Mons. Bernard Fellay, Superiore Generale della Fraternità Sacerdotale San Pio X, era stato consegnato a quest’ultimo un Preambolo Dottrinale, accompagnato da una Nota preliminare, quale base fondamentale per raggiungere la piena riconciliazione con la Sede Apostolica. In esso si enunciavano alcuni principi dottrinali e criteri di interpretazione della dottrina cattolica, necessari per garantire la fedeltà al Magistero della Chiesa e il 'sentire cum Ecclesia'”. "La risposta della Fraternità Sacerdotale San Pio X in merito al summenzionato Preambolo Dottrinale, pervenuta nel gennaio 2012, è stata sottoposta all’esame della Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede e successivamente al giudizio del Santo Padre. In ottemperanza alla decisione di Papa Benedetto XVI, con una lettera consegnata in data odierna, si è comunicato a S.E. Mons. Fellay la valutazione della sua risposta. In essa si fa presente che la posizione, da lui espressa, non è sufficiente a superare i problemi dottrinali che sono alla base della frattura tra la Santa Sede e detta Fraternità". "Al termine dell’odierno incontro, guidato dalla preoccupazione di evitare una rottura ecclesiale dalle conseguenze dolorose e incalcolabili, si è rivolto l’invito al Superiore Generale della Fraternità Sacerdotale San Pio X di voler chiarificare la sua posizione al fine di poter giungere alla ricomposizione della frattura esistente, come auspicato da Papa Benedetto XVI".
