Duchovny Dom Byzantine Catholic Men's Monastic Community is nestled in the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon above the Walla Walla Valley, between Walla Walla, Washington and Pendleton, Oregon. The monastic community is under the protection of the Most Reverend Gerald N. Dino, the Bishop of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of the Protection of Mary, Phoenix, Arizona. Inspired by the Apostolic Community of the Acts of the Apostles, the biblical virtues of poverty, chastity, and obedience are lived in imitation of the traditional monastic rules of the East. We hold all things in common and we are centered on the one necessity of following Christ in the mystical service of the Most Holy Trinity, the center of the monastic experience. This is the gift of the Holy Spirit to the world. Through a life of ascetism and prayer we hope to acquire the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The monastic life, itself, being a gift of the Holy Spirit.
Mission: Through a life of ascetism and prayer we hope to acquire the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The monastic life, itself, being a gift of the Holy Spirit.

A Traveller in Carpathia
Today, we remember Bishop Alexander Chira, Confessor of the Faith and Bishop of the Eparchy of Mukachevo, who fell asleep in the Lord thirty-six years ago after having been imprisoned by the communist regime of the USSR, sent to labor in mining camps for years, eventually released, but forced to remain permanently in exile in Kazakhstan. Where, despite being in exile, he helped found and erect a church with other undesirables who had been sent there and became the Ordinary for Roman Catholics in Karaganda.
In his last letter on May 3rd, 1983 he wrote;
"I am constantly spitting up blood and the doctors are unable to stop my internal bleeding. In a word, the sunset of my earthly life is at hand. In case this would be my last letter, then you must remember that I am most grateful to my beloved Savior for all His blessings which He so lavishly showered upon me during the long journey of my life, coming to an end in Karaganda. I am especially grateful to God for the grace of perseverance in faith, making my own the words of that great Irish confessor, Daniel O'Connell: 'I bequeath my body to the earth, my spirit to God, but my heart I leave to Rome!' Yes, with the last breath of my life I want to profess my complete fidelity to the Vicar of Christ on earth, Pope John Paul II."
Holy Hiero-Confessor Alexander, pray to God for us!
